Alcon Medical Missions Program
The Alcon Medical Missions Program began more than 40 years ago with the purpose of improving and enhancing eye health for those in desperate need of medical attention. As an industry leader who has long supported ophthalmic medical missions for eye health, Alcon proudly offers this program to assist volunteer eye care professionals with the donation of pharmaceuticals and medical devices for sight-saving missions around the globe.
Support from Alcon
Each year, Alcon contributes products to more than 1,200 philanthropic medical missions in more than 90 countries. Alcon's efforts help restore vision to individuals who otherwise might not get the care they need. Their improved vision allows them to lead a richer, fuller life. There are thousands of wonderful stories from this program to share. The stories below of Mustakil and Daisy are typical of the medical cases supported by Alcon.
ORBIS
Mustakil Gu Li was a rambunctious, soccer-playing 8-year-old in remote southwestern China who discovered how dangerous his favorite sport could be - an injury left him without vision in his right eye. Fortunately, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital had set up operations in nearby Kashi. Mustakil's cataract surgery was a success, restoring his vision as well as introducing new techniques to the local eye surgeons. Through volunteers and the donation of supplies to ORBIS, Alcon has been able to help bring eye care to a new level for people like Mustakil, around the globe.
Mercy Ships
Daisy Gomez, a 12-year-old living in Honduras, has been almost completely blind since age 2, making it impossible for her to attend school or interact with other children. Daisy gained hope when she heard of the Caribbean Mercy docked near her village and made the voyage to the ship in order to undergo an operation for cataracts. Now she can see clearly and is back in school thanks in part to the help from companies such as Alcon.
