We began manufacturing and marketing treatment to lower intraocular pressure for glaucoma in 1953. We haven't stopped our pursuit to enhance, preserve and restore vision since. Today, we've expanded our treatment focus to include eye allergies, inflammation and infections, as well as ear infections. And most importantly, age-related diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration will continue to be a central focus for Alcon's pharmaceutical division.

As the global leader in eye care pharmaceutical products, it is estimated that Alcon's aggregate sales in the global ophthalmic pharmaceutical market were approximately USD 3.1 billion in 2010, and are expected to grow continuously due to the increasing aging population.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma, the silent eye disease, is a leading cause of blindness in the world today. We continue to rigorously research, develop and market leading treatments to stop the progression of this disease.  Learn more about Alcon's treatments for Glaucoma

Eye Infections & Inflammation

Ocular infections are fairly common for many people and can usually be treated fairly easily and quickly. Eye inflammation, whether due to surgery or infection, must be treated quickly and effectively to avoid permanent damage to the eye. We have developed and manufactured solutions to treat these conditions for over five decades.  Learn more about Alcon's treatment solutions for eye infections and inflammation

Eye Allergies

Game of BoulesAlcon manufactures products for the treatment of eye allergies. Because eye allergies are fairly common, the need for treatment is great. Our leading treatment – PATANOL® Ophthalmic Solution, or OPATANOL® Ophthalmic Solution depending on the market, can treat ocular allergy signs and symptoms.  With the convenience of once-a-day dosing, PATADAY™ solution, or PATANOL® S in some markets, treats ocular itching associated with eye allergies.  Learn more about Alcon's treatment solutions for eye allergies

Ear Infections

Alcon has also entered the ear infection market by offering anti-infective and anti-inflammatory products. In 1998, we licensed CIPRO®* HC Otic drops to treat otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear. CIPRO® HC is currently marketed in more than 30 countries. More recently, Alcon has developed CIPRODEX®* Otic Suspension, to treat both middle (when the patient has tympanostomy tubes) and outer ear infections (otitis externa).  Learn more about Alcon's treatment solutions for ear infections.
