Disaster Relief
In crisis situations, quality eye care can often be overlooked as individuals struggle with the effects of a catastrophe – yet its importance cannot be overestimated. Thankfully, Alcon is always ready to respond in a crisis with eye care supplies for those affected by unforeseen disasters. Below are a few examples of Alcon's relief support.
Natural Disasters
When Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast of the United States, Alcon associates leapt into action – collecting food items, clothing and non-food items for the victims of the storm. Associates also donated their time to help refugees get back on track as they began to move from temporary shelters into permanent housing.
Alcon does not limit its relief efforts to only the U.S. or to medical supplies. Alcon associates worldwide provided personal contributions to various Tsunami Aid organizations - donations that Alcon matched, in addition to providing product contributions. Total Alcon product and cash contributions for Tsunami relief reached nearly US $3.5 million.
Caring for the Eyes of Firefighters
Alcon often comes to the aid of firefighters, with soothing eye drops to provide relief from the drying and irritating affects of smoke, wind and heat. For example, in the recent California fires, called "the worst, the most expensive, the most severe" in the state's history, Alcon was able to provide aid to the courageous with donations of dry eye products.
