Every day throughout the world we live in, people lose their sight from an otherwise preventable or treatable eye disease. Alcon is working toward a day when such statistics are a thing of the past.

Eye Health Across the Globe

According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 180 million individuals in the world who are blind or are at serious risk of becoming blind. This number is staggering when you consider that as many as 75 percent of these cases could have been prevented or treated at an early stage. Vision problems are a global concern Unfortunately, proper eye care is either unaffordable or unavailable in many areas of the world today. This problem is compounded by the fact that many within the medical communities that serve these areas lack the proper education, tools and resources to provide adequate care. The world's population is aging, and the prevalence of blindness caused by treatable or preventable eye diseases – such as cataracts and glaucoma – could continue to grow at an exponential rate without proper action. At Alcon, we're dedicated to bringing about change on a global level. Through the discovery of new pharmaceuticals and the development of new surgical devices, we are enabling physicians to do more in the fight against preventable blindness and the treatment of other eye conditions that unnecessarily plague so many areas of the world. By supporting missions and educating eye care specialists in developing areas, we are planting the seed of proper eye care while encouraging these new practices to take root and grow. It is this shared vision of a world free of preventable and treatable eye disease that drives Alcon to succeed – a vision that we hope some day will be a reality.
