Alcon associates take an active role in making a difference in their local communities through volunteer service activities, and involvement with organizations and programs such as United Way, Kids Vision for Life and Community Partnership Day.
United Way Partnership
For more than 40 years, Alcon has actively partnered with United Way, which works to ensure human potential through the mobilization and support of charitable organizations. Our long-standing relationship is due, in part, to our shared goal of strengthening our local communities. Since 2009, our combined corporate and employee donations to United Way have exceeded $10 million in the U.S. and Canada.
Since 2009, the Alcon Foundation has partnered with the Essilor Vision Foundation in support of its U.S. Kids Vision for Life program to address an often overlooked issue within the United States: the number of school children who have vision problems.
The mission of Kids Vision for Life is to eliminate poor vision and its lifelong consequences by providing free eye exams and new glasses to students in need. The program also educates parents and communities about the importance of proper vision care.
Through Kids Vision for Life, Alcon works with area elementary schools in locations where Alcon has a U.S. presence. During 2013 alone, Kids Vision for Life provided approximately 70,000 free vision screenings and 35,000 free eye exams, and gave away free glasses to nearly 27,000 children.
One-in-four children have a vision problem and of those, 90% do not wear glasses. If children can’t see well, they disengage from learning and are more likely to drop out of school.
Serving our Cities and Neighborhoods We strive to improve the communities in which we live and work.
Community Partnership Day
A cornerstone of the Novartis – and Alcon – global commitment to Corporate Responsibility is Community Partnership Day, an annual event in which associates worldwide make a difference in their local communities through service projects and team-based volunteer activities. In 2013, more than 4,500 Alcon associates worldwide volunteered their time and resources to help make Community Partnership Day a success.
