Fort Worth, September 07, 2016 – Alcon, the global leader in eye care and a division of Novartis, unveils an extensive program at the 16th EURETINA congress and XXXIV Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark, September 8-14. This year’s plan showcases Alcon’s latest technological innovations in cataract, refractive and retinal surgeries.

“Alcon is proud to showcase our latest advances designed to enhance surgeon performance during cataract, refractive and retinal procedures,” said Franck Leveiller, Global Head of Research & Development at Alcon.

At the Alcon booth (C307) and during the Alcon education sessions, delegates will be able to discover our intraocular lenses (IOL) and experience the company latest technologies:

  • NGENUITY 3D Visualization System: a technological platform for Digitally-Assisted Vitreoretinal Surgery to guide surgeon decision-making during retinal surgeries. The NGENUITY 3D Visualization System features digital filters that may enhance visualization, facilitates operating using lower light levels and its high-dynamic range OLED screen which provides increased color contrast with comparable depth of field. The design may improve surgeon posture to reduce fatigue.
  • Online Toric IOL Calculator: a tool aimed for patients with corneal astigmatism. The calculator includes an optimized user interface and integrates the Barrett Toric Algorithm which demonstrated superior preoperative refractive predictability versus other formulas and nomograms.1 This best-in-class tool theoretically accounts for posterior corneal astigmatism, calculates patient-specific effective lens position and is designed to improve preoperative refractive predictability by using a centroid value for surgically induced astigmatism.1,2,3 The new online Alcon Toric IOL Calculator is  available in more than 20 languages.
  • The Contoura™ Vision System: a Topography-Guided LASIK treatment designed to provide surgeons the ability to perform personalized laser procedures based on the unique corneal topography of each eye. In a recent US multicenter clinical trial4, Contoura™ Vision achieved better unaided visual acuity 12 months after surgery than with glasses or contact lenses prior to surgery. 92.6% of eyes that received Topography-Guided LASIK treatment achieved 20/20 vision or better: specifically, 64.8% experienced 20/16 vision or better, and 34.4% could see 20/12.5 or better, 12 months after surgery. The procedure also showed statistically significant reductions in some of the visual symptoms associated with LASIK, such as glare, light sensitivity, difficulty driving at night and difficulty while reading. Contoura™ Vision can be performed with WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser Systems, in conjunction with the WaveLight® Topolyzer™ Vario Diagnostic Device.

This year, the Alcon Foundation is partnering with the ESCRS to organize a digital archery activity. Open to all delegates, this activity will be held every day at the Alcon booth. At the end of the congress, the Alcon Foundation will contribute € 25,000 to support an Orbis comprehensive eye health program designed to develop and increase access to high-quality eye care services at Yaoundé Central Hospital in Cameroon, Africa.

“Alcon has been a partner of Orbis for more than 30 years and has helped equip our flying eye hospitals with state of the art eye care equipment. Today we are thrilled to collaborate, at the ESCRS congress, to increase quality, efficiency, and accessibility of eye health services in an area where access to treatment has been limited,” said Bob Ranck, President and CEO of Orbis International. “We hope many delegates will take part to this activity and help us change the lives of many people in need!”

Alcon’s educational program will focus on complex cases in cataract refractive and retinal surgeries, presented by European experts:
