· Major scientific findings presented on contact lens discomfort (CLD), a condition that impacts millions contact lens wearers every year worldwide
Birmingham, England – June 6, 2014 – Alcon, the global leader in eye care, renews its support as a Patron Sponsor of the 38th Annual Conference of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA), held in Birmingham, England, June 6-9, 2014. During the conference, Alcon presented the technologies driving research and development within Alcon’s Vision Care business, and showcased the company’s latest products. Alcon is also supporting the work of the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), which also presented the findings of their Contact Lens Discomfort (CLD) workshops during BCLA.
“Alcon has a long-standing history of continuous education in the contact lens industry. We are very pleased to support the scientific program of a major educational meeting, such as BCLA, with presentations on lens surface and technical innovations in contact lens material and lens care products,” said Shervin Korangy, General Manager, Alcon UK & Ireland.
“We are happy to showcase our latest contact lenses being launched this year, which bring true science and innovation in their own category. We are also proud to show our latest scientific break-through in the industry, DAILIES TOTAL1®, which recently received the Optician Award for ‘2014 Contact Lens Product of the Year’ and in 2013, was granted a patent by the European Patent Office for pioneering manufacturing methods and contact lens technology,” he added.
In line with its “Performance Driven by Science” approach, Alcon is also proud to support TFOS, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the research and education of eye health. During BCLA, Alcon was a sponsor of the TFOS workshops to lead the development of a comprehensive report on CLD and support the translations of the Executive Summary into Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
“Up to one-half of all contact lens wearers experience contact lens discomfort, which could be the leading cause of discontinuation. However, until the recent Report of the TFOS Workshop on CLD, there was not any global consensus concerning the definition, classification, epidemiology, diagnosis, management and proper design of clinical studies for CLD,” explained Dr. Mark Willcox, Professor, School of Optometry & Vision Science, University of New South Wales and Vice-Chair of the Workshop. “TFOS is pleased to present at BCLA, the conclusions and recommendations of this Report, which was created through an 18-month effort of 79 international experts. We hope that this Report will significantly increase awareness of factors that may, and may not, contribute to the generation of CLD, and stimulate innovative research in this very important field,” said Dr. Willcox.
