New data shows DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses demonstrate long-lasting lubricity and low concentration of silicon at lens surface
Feb 02, 2015
Lubricity of DAILIES TOTAL1® after 16 hours of wear was shown to be equivalent to the lubricity of unworn lenses.1
In a comparison of other silicone hydrogel contact lens materials, DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses were shown to have the lowest concentration – less than 1% – of silicon at the outermost lens surface, which may influence the improved wettability over other lens materials.2
Fort Worth, Texas, February 2, 2015– Alcon, the global leader in eye care and the second largest division of Novartis, supported the presentation of two clinical posters highlighting two factors that may lend to the performance of DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses.
“DAILIES TOTAL1®contact lenses contain less than one percent of silicone within the top 10nm of the lens surface,” said Scott Perry, primary investigator and Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida. “The unique water gradient technology of DAILIES TOTAL1® creates an ultrasoft, hydrophilic surface gel with essentially no silicone at the surface that provides lasting lubricity for exceptional comfort.*”
Research conducted by Alcon Research Ltd., demonstrated in a prospective, randomized, cross-over, observer-masked study that DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses had no decrease in lubricity throughout a 16 hour wearing period.1
In a study conducted at the University of Florida, DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses were shown to have an extremely low concentration of silicon at the outermost lens surface compared to other lens materials.2 Very low levels of silicon at the lens surface – such as in DAILIES TOTAL1®– may be associated with enhanced wettability of the lens and its interaction with the tear film and ocular surface tissues.
“We have heard an overwhelmingly positive response from patients about the DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses,” said Dwight Akerman, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, Head, Global Professional Affairs, Vision Care Franchise, Alcon. “These two studies help us understand the reasons behind the performance patients experience throughout the wearing day.”
Both studies were presented at the 2014 American Academy of Optometry (AAO) meeting in Denver, Colorado.
*Based on wearers agreeing with the statement “I can comfortably wear these lenses all day long.” In a randomized, subject-masked clinical study, n=40; Alcon data on file, 2011.
