The holidays are a special time of year where everyone is a little kinder and more helpful to one another. It seems we are all looking for ways to give back, and maybe you are trying to figure ways you can too. At Alcon, we are committed to helping the global community, specifically the visually impaired. Through our innovative products and corporate giving efforts, our single driving mission is to help the visually impaired 365 days a year. Fortunately, you don’t have to be the global leader in eye care to help those who have difficulty seeing. Here are some simple things you can do that can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
Read a Book Aloud. One of the most common issues experienced by the visually impaired is reading text. Take some time to read a book to someone who may have difficulty. Whether it’s a classic novel, a gripping fantasy, or edge-of-your-seat mystery, time reading out loud can be very spellbinding.
Be a Shopping Buddy. Especially during this time of year, shopping can be a difficult experience for those who are visually impaired. Accompany someone to the store, or go on their behalf. Help them keep a list of presents to buy, or print one out in a large font size so they can better manage.
Light up Their Home. Make sure that their home is brightly and evenly lit throughout, especially in rooms like the bathroom and kitchen. Adding brighter bulbs, or placing extra lamps in darker corners can help those with difficulty seeing in dim lighting get around more easily.
While these are just a few small things, there are an endless number of ways you can help someone this holiday season.
If you’d like to help bring the gift of sight to those in need, we encourage you to support our global partners. In addition to the nonprofit partners like SEE International and Orbis listed above, consider a donation to:
