Alcon’s People Power Innovation, Giving, and Growth
May 15, 2017
From humble beginnings creating sterile, injectable vitamins and oral products using a blender and a pressure cooker to becoming the global leader in eye care, Alcon’s tenacity and passion for making tomorrow better for patients around the world been a constant.
2017 marks Alcon’s 70th anniversary and provides the perfect opportunity for us to reflect on the past, look at where we are today and focus on how we will reimagine eye care in the future.
It is also an opportunity to say thank you. The success Alcon has enjoyed has come through the effort and dedication of its people – your ongoing commitment to customers and patients.
Over the years, three keys to Alcon’s success have emerged, according to Ed McGough, Head of Manufacturing and Technical Operations, who has worked for the company for nearly 26 years. The first is the breadth of innovative products that support eye care professionals’ in helping their patients see better. Second is the strong, trusted relationships Alcon has built with our customers around the world.
“You’ve got to have number three – great people – to build trust and strong relationships,” said Ed. “Great people that are customer-focused, that clearly have values, integrity and can be trusted to deliver consistently for the benefit of the customer and patient. This is the secret of Alcon.”
Since creating and patenting the DROP-TAINER® eye drop dispensing bottle in 1953, and what is still used today to administer eye drops, Alcon’s focus on patients has led to cutting-edge innovations and breakthrough technology, transforming the way eye diseases and conditions are treated. Joe Rappon, who has spent 11 years in Research and Development, said that Alcon is always looking to do things differently.

“Innovation is in Alcon’s DNA. I think it’s what drives us forward,” said Joe. “Instead of thinking about how we change things from where they are today, we are thinking about… what can we come up with that’s going to help patients and doctors in a way that they’ve never seen before.”
Alcon Gives Back
Beyond products, Alcon also works to change lives through the Medical Missions program.
For more than 50 years, these sight-saving medical missions have made a lasting impact on both individuals and communities-at-large. Medical Mission teams work side by side with local eye care professionals to provide hands-on training, while also helping increase patient awareness about the need for proper eye care. Through ophthalmic medicines and devices donated by Alcon, Medical Missions improve and restore vision to patients around the world, and help improve the sustainability of local eye care clinics so they can provide long-term care to more people.
“Think of what it would be like not to have your sight,” said Winona Edwards, a retired 31-year associate who was formerly President of the Alcon Foundation. “I had the phenomenal opportunity of going on Medical Mission trips with doctors and seeing people have their sight restored. It was an indescribable experience.”
Alcon’s Future is Bright
Looking ahead, Alcon will remain laser focused on what our patients and customers need. It has always been our number one priority. To Seba Leoni, Vice President and Global Head, Surgical Suite, the sky’s the limit.
“Waking up every day with the opportunity to make decisions that can ultimately help millions of patients’ lives around the world is huge,” said Seba. “Knowing that we are advancing technologies that, in the future, my children can benefit from, gives me a special sense of pride.”
