Patient Assistance Programs

Engaging Patients in their Care

Alcon has a long heritage in partnering with eye care professionals around the world to help educate patients about eye diseases, raise awareness and put eye care higher on the healthcare agenda.

Patient Assistance

Alcon works with policymakers to allow co-pay empowering patients to choose the vision care products and services they prefer. For example, while co-payment has been available to patients in the U.S. for many years, an increasing number of patients in Europe can now select co-pay to choose the type of intraocular lens (IOL) they want to have implanted during cataract surgery . Patients can choose to have cataract surgery with a conventional IOL and be fully reimbursed. Or, they can pay an additional out-of-pocket cost to have an advanced technology IOL (ATIOL) implanted into the eye. ATIOLs can correct refractive errors, such as presbyopia and astigmatism, while also removing the cataract, therefore, eliminating the need for eyeglasses in their daily lives.

Alcon also supports more than 600 medical missions and numerous partnerships with non-profit organizations each year to bring eye care to places in which services and treatments are not yet available, train local physicians to perform state-of-the-art surgery and provide sustainable eye care.

U.S. Patient Assistance through Alcon Cares, Inc.

Through our patient assistance program, Alcon Cares, Inc., we help individuals, clinics and hospitals across the U.S. gain access to the eye care medicines they need.

Alcon Cares, Inc. is a voluntary public service program that provides medication to qualified, low-income individuals residing in the U.S. at no charge. These product donations are governed by regulations from a number of U.S. government agencies. Patients who request an Alcon product must show proof of income, fill out an application, and have a doctor’s signed approval for the prescription.

Alcon Cares, Inc. is open to private patients of U.S.-licensed health care providers who cannot afford their medication and have no other prescription coverage.* Patients should qualify for the income test at 200 percent (two times) the current year’s poverty level under the number of persons living in a household.
