Alcon Medical Missions providing eye care in EthiopiaThe Alcon Medical Missions Program began more than 40 years ago with the purpose of improving and enhancing eye health for those in desperate need of medical attention. As an industry leader who has long supported ophthalmic medical missions for eye health, Alcon proudly offers this program to assist volunteer eye care professionals with the donation of pharmaceuticals and medical devices for sight-saving missions around the globe.

Support from Alcon

Each year, Alcon contributes products to more than 1,200 philanthropic medical missions in more than 90 countries. Alcon's efforts help restore vision to individuals who otherwise might not get the care they need. Their improved vision allows them to lead a richer, fuller life. There are thousands of wonderful stories from this program to share. The stories below of Mustakil and Daisy are typical of the medical cases supported by Alcon.

ORBIS

8-Year-Old Boy with Eye Injury in China

Mustakil Gu Li was a rambunctious, soccer-playing 8-year-old in remote south-western China who discovered how dangerous his favorite sport could be - an injury left him without vision in his right eye. Fortunately, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital had set up operations in nearby Kashi. Mustakil's cataract surgery was a success, restoring his vision as well as introducing new techniques to the local eye surgeons. Through volunteers and the donation of supplies to ORBIS, Alcon has been able to help bring eye care to a new level for people like Mustakil, around the globe.

Mercy Ships

12-Year-Old Regains Sight in HondurasDaisy Gomez, a 12-year-old living in Honduras, has been almost completely blind since age 2, making it impossible for her to attend school or interact with other children. Daisy gained hope when she heard of the Caribbean Mercy docked near her village and made the voyage to the ship in order to undergo an operation for cataracts. Now she can see clearly and is back in school thanks in part to the help from companies such as Alcon.

Applying for Medical Missions

Alcon has established product donation programs to help patients outside the United States. These programs are developed for health care providers who travel to or live in these areas and provide care to patients who are without access to quality eye care.

Typical lead time for the application process is four to six weeks from the date it is submitted. Please note, if you submit an application less than four weeks from your departure date, the request may not be processed in time.

Alcon requires all medical professionals requesting product to provide a letter of invitation from the host country’s Ministry of Health. A letter of invitation from an in-country hospital or organization will not be accepted unless it is governed by the Ministry of Health. Please allow enough time in the planning process to obtain the letter as your request will not be processed without it.

Please note, the following countries do not require a Ministry of Health letter: Congo, Cuba, India, Myanmar, Sierra Leone and Sudan. Instead, an invitation letter from the in-country organization (i.e. hospital, rotary, etc) is required.

If you would like to review all requirements before beginning the request process, you can view our guidelines form. This is for reference only. All requests must be submitted using the online process.

Please complete the online Eligibility Questionnaire to determine if you qualify to apply for product donations. A link to the online application will be provided upon completion of the questionnaire.
