  • New data on CLEAR CARE® Solution presented during the 2015 Annual Meeting for The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), May 3-7, in Denver, Colorado
  • Study results reveal CLEAR CARE Solution is superior to biguanide-preserved multipurpose solutions at reducing lip papillae and contact lens wearing symptoms when used for 90 days

Fort Worth, Texas, May 7, 2015  Alcon, the global leader in eye care and the second largest division of Novartis, announced new study results on CLEAR CARE® Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution being presented at the Annual Meeting for The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), May 3-7, in Denver, Colorado.

"Our study results indicated that CLEAR CARE Solution is a good option for contact lens wearers that experience lid papillae," said Christopher Lievens, OD, MS, FAAO, primary investigator at one of the study sites and Chief of Staff of The EYE Center at the Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tennessee. "The solution was well tolerated by symptomatic contact lens wearers and showed a significant improvement in lid papillae".

Study Details:

  • This randomized, controlled, investigator-masked, parallel group, multi-site study was conducted in 128 symptomatic contact lens wearers with mild to severe investigator-related palpebral roughness who were habitually using a biguanide-preserved multi-purpose solution. The subjects who used CLEAR CARE Solution during the study showed a significant improvement in lid papillae and symptoms compared to the subjects in the biguanide-preserved multi-purpose solution control group.

"As a result of contact lens papillary conjunctivitis, wearers can experience reduced comfortable wearing times," said Jessie Lemp, MS, DrPH, Global Brand Medical Affairs Lead, Vision Care, Alcon. "It’s helpful for eye care professionals to know that CLEAR CARE can reduce lid papillae and associated symptoms when used in place of certain multipurpose solutions."

About CLEAR CARE Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution

CLEAR CARE Cleaning & Disinfecting Solution (AOSEPT Plus in some markets) contains 3% hydrogen peroxide and are indicated for use with soft (hydrophilic) and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. During the cleaning process, the hydrogen peroxide is neutralized in the special lens case provided to leave behind a preservative-free saline solution that is gentle on the eyes. Cleaned and disinfected lenses can be stored in the neutralized solution in the unopened lens case up to seven days.

CLEAR CARE requires patients to follow special cleaning and disinfecting instructions, including ensuring the lenses remain in the special lens case for at least six hours to allow the hydrogen peroxide to neutralize. Special care is needed to follow directions to avoid accidental misuse.
