  • New data on DAILIES® AQUACOMFORT PLUS® Multifocal contact lenses to be presented during the 2015 Annual Conference of the British Contact Lens Association, May 29-31, in Liverpool, UK
  • Results indicate DAILIES AQUACOMFORT PLUS Multifocal correction allows larger areas of focus in the near and intermediate regions when compared to monovision contact lens correction1
  • Additional findings suggest multifocal vision correction provides significantly better stereoacuity1

Liverpool, UK, May 31, 2015  Alcon, the global leader in eye care and a division of Novartis, announced the results of a new study comparing DAILIES® AQUACOMFORT PLUS® Multifocal presbyopia-correcting contact lenses to single vision lenses fitted for monovision correction of presbyopia. The study results will be presented at the 2015 Annual Conference of the British Contact Lens Association, May 29-31, in Liverpool, UK. Researchers found greater areas of focus in the intermediate and near zones for multifocal contact lens vision correction in comparison to monovision correction.

"Monovision contact lens correction and multifocal contact lenses are two vision correcting contact lens options for presbyopes who do not want to wear reading glasses," said Robert Montes-Mico, OD, MPhil, PhD, University of Valencia, Spain. "Our results suggest that multifocal contact lenses provide better visual performance than monovision for established presbyopes."

Study Details:

This cross-over-investigation, sponsored by Alcon, compared 24 established presbyopes. The study compared DAILIES AQUACOMFORT PLUS Multifocal to nelfilcon-A single vision contact lenses fitted as monovision contact lenses. Area of focus for the distance, intermediate and near regions were calculated from the individual binocular defocus curves. Additional assessments included high- and low-luminance visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and stereoacuity.

  • Using defocus curves, larger areas-of-focus in the near and intermediate regions were demonstrated for multifocal contact lenses compared with monovision contact lens correction (p=0.007 & p<0.0001, respectively). Further, significantly better stereoacuity was reported with the multifocal contact lenses as compared to monovision.

"These results once again demonstrate that patients wearing DAILIES AQUACOMFORT PLUS Multifocal contact lenses may perform better visually than if they were wearing single vision contact lenses for their presbyopia," said Dwight Akerman, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, Head, Global Professional Affairs, Vision Care Franchise Management.
